Tips for Selecting Successful Search Terms

Keyword research is important to the success of your online marketing.  What are the terms your potential clients are using?  How competitive are these search terms?  What search terms should you use for link building?

Determine what terms your potential clients are using.
The best way to do this is to listen to what they are asking you.  If they ask, "do you sell pink wizzy gigs?" Then a search term would be "Pink Wizzy Gigs".

Sometimes clients call things by the wrong name.  You should select those "wrong" search terms.  Once customers are at your site, then educate them.

Identify Your Targets
We’d all love to rank well for the most general and all-encompassing search phrase related to our topic, but only a handful ever will. Select search phrases of 3 to 5 words that are targeted to what you offer.  This tactic may bring you less traffic, but the traffic it brings will be more qualified.

Use Local Search Terms
One area small to mid-sized websites can really find a competitive edge is in locally-specific search phrases. These are inherently less competitive and therefore are easier to rank well for. If you only do business in a local area (within 50 miles or even within a few states) use that to your advantage.  No reason to have your site appear in California if you don’t so business there.

Review your Site Analytics
One of the great benefits of web analytics is that it allows you to monitor keyword referrals. In other words, you can find out what visitors are searching for when they land at your site.  If your hosting company does not offer web analytics, Google Analytics offers great information.
